Mobile Ordering Showdown: Disney vs. Universal – Which Theme Park Does It Better?

If you’ve visited a major theme park in the past few years, you know that mobile ordering has become a game-changer. No more waiting in long lines just to order a burger and fries – now you can skip straight to pickup. But not all mobile ordering systems are created equal. Let’s dive into how Disney and Universal stack up.

The Basics: How They Work

Both Disney and Universal allow you to order food through their official apps (My Disney Experience for Disney, Universal Orlando Resort app for Universal). You browse menus, customize your order, pay in advance, and then head to the restaurant when you’re ready to pick up your food.

Sounds simple enough, right? But the devil is in the details.

The Disney Experience

Disney’s mobile ordering, available through the My Disney Experience app, has been around since 2017 and has become increasingly refined. You can browse participating quick-service restaurants throughout the parks, place your order whenever you want, and then notify the app when you’ve arrived at the restaurant. Your food is typically ready within 10-15 minutes of you hitting that “I’m here, prepare my order” button.

Disney’s system shines in a few key areas. First, the integration with the rest of the My Disney Experience ecosystem is seamless. You can mobile order while checking wait times or managing your Lightning Lane selections. Second, Disney has gotten really good at timing – the food genuinely does come out fresh and hot when you arrive, rather than sitting under a heat lamp. Third, the number of participating locations is extensive, covering most quick-service spots across all four parks.

The downside? During peak meal times, mobile order pickup areas can get chaotic. You might find yourself in a sea of people all staring at screens waiting for their number to be called. Also, some of the most popular restaurants can have limited mobile order availability during busy periods, forcing you to plan ahead or be flexible with your timing.

The Universal Approach

Universal’s mobile ordering came later to the game but has learned from Disney’s experience. Available at Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe and Volcano Bay, the system works similarly but with some notable differences.

Universal’s strength is in its pickup process. Many Universal locations have dedicated mobile order pickup windows that are completely separate from the regular ordering lines. This separation means less congestion and often faster pickup times. The system also tends to be a bit more forgiving with timing – you don’t always need to notify them you’ve arrived, and in some cases, your food starts being prepared as soon as you place the order.

Another strength is you need to be seated at a table before you can begin your order. The mobile order process will ask for the table number or simple scan the QR code on the table to begin. No more waling around trying to find seating, only to find spots camped out by people not eating or ordering. In fact many Quick Service restaurants in Universal have cast members that enforce the no eat no seat rule.

However, Universal’s mobile ordering isn’t quite as widespread across their parks. You’ll find fewer participating restaurants compared to Disney, and the menu selections within the app sometimes feel more limited. The app experience itself can also be a bit clunkier, though Universal has been steadily improving it.

The Verdict

So which is better? Honestly, it depends on what you value most.

What puts Universal ahead of Disney is that you must include a table number on your order. Universal has put a lot of thought into how to solve the seating problem. I really wish Disney would follow suite. It is extremely frustrating to order and not being able to find a place to enjoy your meal. Universal has solved that issue for the most part.

Choose Disney’s mobile ordering if you want the most options and the tightest integration with the overall park experience. If you’re a Disney regular who’s already living in the My Disney Experience app, the mobile ordering feels like a natural extension. Just be prepared for crowded pickup areas during lunch and dinner rushes.

Choose Universal’s mobile ordering if you value a streamlined pickup process and want to avoid the masses of people hovering around pickup counters. While you have fewer restaurant choices, the ones that participate often offer a smoother, less stressful experience.

The real winner? Theme park visitors in general. Both systems beat standing in a 30-minute line just to order chicken nuggets. Whichever park you’re visiting, take advantage of mobile ordering – your feet (and your patience) will thank you.

Pro tip for both parks: Order early or late to avoid the peak rush times. And always check the app’s estimated wait times before committing to a restaurant – sometimes the mobile order queue can be just as backed up as the physical line would have been.
